Garmin MARQ Gen 3 beats Fenix 9 Pro in 8 areas, including Lume Mode

At first glance, the brand-new Garmin MARQ Gen 3 differs only superficially from the Garmin Fenix 9 Pro inReach ($1,199 on Amazon), and the specifications are virtually identical. The more expensive flagship stands out visually from the Fenix 9 Pro primarily through its ceramic bezel, while the MARQ Gen 3 offered in six different variants for different target groups, from golfers and divers to pilots.
However, as the in-depth review of the MARQ Gen 3 by DC Rainmaker shows, there are a total of eight surprising differences between the two smartwatch lineups in both hardware and software. This starts with the buttons, which on the MARQ are still inductive and waterproof but provide a mechanical click, rather than merely simulating feedback through a vibration motor as on the Fenix 9 Pro.
The MARQ Gen 3 not only uses a harder titanium alloy, but also offers twice as much storage at 128 GB. According to Ray Maker, this additional storage is primarily used as a cache for ClimbPro so that a route does not have to be loaded manually in advance. This reduces the planning effort, but also requires a lot of storage, as the smartwatch has to preload all data for roads and hiking trails in the surrounding area.
There are also differences in the software. Most notably, the MARQ Gen 3 can navigate directly to an address of your choice, rather than only to publicly accessible destinations such as restaurants or points of interest, as the Fenix 9 Pro does. The keyboard can provide text suggestions for faster typing, while some watch faces are available exclusively on the MARQ series.
One of the perhaps most unusual features is Lume Mode, which is already familiar from the Garmin Descent Mk3. When this mode is activated, the watch face simulates a luminescent analog watch in low light. While this offers little benefit in terms of readability, it does look rather stylish. On the Fenix 9 Pro, this function is not available system-wide, but there are watch faces that offer a similar feature.
