Galaxy S24 Ultra wins MKBHD's smartphone of the year award, iPhone continues to reign supreme in camera performance
Prominent YouTuber Marquess Brownlee, better known as MKBHD, has once again graced us with his annual smartphone awards — a tradition that has now spanned a decade. Smartphones have truly come a long way in the past 10 years, with dramatic advancements in nearly every category. Marquess gives out a surfeit of awards, one for each unique category, and the results are definitely fascinating every single year. Needless to say, 2024 is no exception.
This year's awards had their fair share of surprise announcements, as well as not-so-surprise announcements. For instance, the iPhone 16 Pro won the "Best Camera" award, and that has been the case for a few years at this point, even though the iPhone has neither ever won MKBHD's blind camera test, nor has it ever packed the flashiest hardware. Moreover, the Samsung S24 Ultra (currently $999 on Amazon) snatched the MVP award, which marks the fourth time that a Galaxy device has obtained the award. The S24 Ultra also won the "Best Big Phone" award, which is perfectly justified considering that Samsung makes great use of the screen real estate available in its large flagships.
Hilariously enough, the vanilla iPhone 16 managed to snag the "Best Small Phone" award, despite being a 6.1-inch smartphone. Marquess was quick to point out the irony: the "Best Big Phone" winner from 2014 was, shockingly enough, smaller in screen size than the best "Best Small Phone" of 2024. The first of its kind "tri-fold" Huawei Mate XT, arguably the most interesting phone launched this year, won the "Best Design" award. The full list of winners can be found below.
