The CPU performance increase over last year's Phoenix models is barely noticeable as revealed by GPD's CPU-Z tests. However, the update seems to be focusing on the AI capabilities, with 40% improved NPU power and a base spec of at least 32 GB of RAM as per Microsoft's new AI requirements.

ITHome reports that GPD recently announced a Win Max 2 mini laptop / handheld console refreshed with AMD’s latest Hawk Point Ryzen 8000 APUs, as revealed by a series of screenshots posted on one of the company’s official channels. The screenshots include CPU-Z benchmark results that are comparable to last year’s R7 7840U.

While the new Hawk Point R7 8840U CPU itself is only slightly faster than the original Phoenix model, the refresh is clearly focused on the 40% improved AI processing power of the latest XDNA NPU. The base model will feature 32 GB RAM to future-proof the device and also make it compliant with Microsoft’s new requirements for AI devices that require at least 16 GB RAM.

Last year, the GPD Win Max 2 was among the first to feature an OCulink port for external GPUs, in case the integrated Radeon 780M GPU finds the maximum 2560 X 1600 resolution of the 10.1-inch display too demanding. Of course, GPD also released its own eGPU dock with the GPD G1 that packs a Radeon RX 7600M XT laptop-grade GPU along with more video outputs, USB porta and even an SD 4.0 card reader.

No price and availability info for now, but, looking at the R7 7840U + 32 GB RAM + 2 TB model that currently costs $1,369.99, we can expect the R7 8840U model to cost slightly more.
