Tesla may release a cheaper Cybertruck version with one rear motor in 2025, just as intended, and is trying to move inventory in the meantime.

The IRS, which administers the federal EV tax credit program, has included a mysterious single-motor Cybertruck in its list of eligible 2025 electric vehicles. Before the Cybertruck launched, Tesla had a reservations list that had a RWD version as the cheapest Cybertruck model, essentially the one that Elon Musk said will start from $40,000 many moons ago.

Tesla only launched the most expensive dual- and tri-motor Cybertruck versions, though, and their exclusive Foundation Series versions that started from $100,000 at that. Elon Musk then hinted that Tesla is leaving the base single-motor electric pickup for a 2025 release when it will have enough 4680 battery yield and early adopters will have gobbled up the more expensive versions.

It seems that this time is now, as not only did Tesla stop producing Foundation Series trims and started assembling dual-motor and Cyberbeast trucks that are $20,000 cheaper, but is now also resorting to direct Cybertruck price cuts for those same non-Foundation series units.

The Cybertruck price discounts are first coming to inventory vehicles, and Tesla is decreasing their price tag by $1,600 or up to $2,630 for demo vehicles. When stacked with referral and tax credits, the inventory Cybertruck price is now closer to the $70,000 than to the $80,000 mark.

When Tesla introduces inventory discounts, it often follows up with am outright price decrease, so a direct Cybertruck price cut is not out of the question. If, however, the IRS has preemptively listed the RWD Cybertruck in the list of eligible 2025 vehicles based on release info supplied by Tesla, this could bring the Cybertruck's starting price further down towards the $60,000 mark.

It won't be the $40,000 that Elon Musk promised many years ago, but it's not the $100,000 launch price, either, so Tesla could see a significant uptick in new Cybertruck sales later this year, just as the initial excitement has worn off and manufactured pickups are languishing in inventory.

A cheaper RWD Cybertruck and a price discount on the dual- and tri-motor versions, however, are certain to decimate the second-hand market for Cybertrucks, what with people paying over  a hundred grand for Tesla's inaugural electric pickup, only to witness it lose 30% of its value in the first year of ownership alone.
