“Finally, NFS Underground 3”: Heatwarped brings back old-school arcade racing

Fans of early-2000s arcade racing games have a new reason to get excited. Indie studio Sealime has unveiled Heatwarped, an open-world street racer that looks like a modern take on the classic Need for Speed Underground formula.

The reveal trailer shows exactly what the game is going for: neon-lit streets, night races, heavily customized cars, drifting, nitrous and the kind of exaggerated visual effects that defined arcade racers of the 2000s. The overall presentation is so close to Need for Speed Underground 2 that it could easily be mistaken for an unofficial sequel at first glance.

Heatwarped is set in the fictional city of Ratfield, where players take part in illegal street races, customize their cars and build a reputation among other racers. The game also features an in-game racing forum that players can use to meet other racers and find events.

The developers are clearly leaning into the old-school formula rather than trying to reinvent arcade racing. The game offers an open world, various race types, drifting and time trials, while car customization plays a major role. The current demo already gives players a chance to try some of these mechanics.

The project has attracted plenty of attention from Need for Speed fans, with many players comparing it directly to Underground and Underground 2. The visual style, interface and overall atmosphere are particularly familiar, and one YouTube commenter summed up the reaction simply: “Finally, NFS Underground 3.”

There is, however, a reason not to get too carried away just yet. Heatwarped is still in development, and the demo is clearly not a finished product. Player feedback has been generally enthusiastic, but some have pointed to issues with driving physics, AI and technical optimization.

Still, the project is already doing something that many official racing games have stopped trying to do: bringing back the distinctive style of early-2000s street racing. The developers have not announced a release date yet, but a playable PC demo is already available through Steam.
