FBI and other US authorities warn of most common email scams
In a joint effort, the FBI, US Attorney’s Office, and local police agencies are cautioning the public against three prevalent online scams. This joint advisory comes as part of the Don't Click December consumer protection campaign, featuring weekly public service announcements leading up to Christmas.
Most common scams are The package can’t be delivered, Account subscription, and Phantom hacker.
The Package Delivery scheme involves fraudsters reaching out through text messages or emails, asserting that a package delivery is hindered, and recipients must click a provided link to either submit personal information or pay a redelivery fee.
The Account Subscription fraud targets individuals with deceptive emails or texts, falsely claiming a subscription renewal and urging recipients to click a link for verification, unsubscribing, or obtaining a receipt.
The Phantom Hacker scam manifests as unsolicited messages, be it through phone calls, emails, texts, or pop-ups, wherein criminals pose as "tech support." Victims are coerced into providing access to their computers under the guise of updating software to thwart potential hackers.
These three schemes alone collectively result in billions of dollars in losses annually, according to the joint advisory.
