Epic Games Store is currently offering the second mystery free game for the holiday season 2025, and the third giveaway will soon be revealed. Before that happens, users have the chance to grab a surprise freebie, which is available for both Android and iOS.
It's Shotgun King - The Final Checkmate. The game was released in 2022 on PC and later ported to console and mobile. At the core, it's a turn-based tactics game that features roguelike elements. It reimagines chess with an interesting twist, introducing gunfight mechanics.
Players get to control a black king chess piece, armed with a shotgun. As they navigate the chessboard, they get to decide whether to move or shoot, and this choice plays a crucial role. Moving to empty tiles allows reloading, and shooting empties the shotgun, but it costs a turn.
There are multiple stages in this currently free Epic Games Store game, and to win in each, players need to defeat the white king chess piece. On mobile, the developers introduced touch-based aiming and movement mechanics. Even though the runs can be tense and short, the title has what many call addictive replayability.
The current free game is also praised for its visual feedback that makes victories feel rewarding. However, the level-up system isn't as refined as other roguelike games, and in the later ranks, there's an unusual difficulty spike.
Shotgun King - The Final Checkmate generally costs $6.99 when not on sale. The PC version (curr. $6.49 on Humble Bundle) that's available on Steam has over 3,500 reviews, with 94% of them being positive. It will be available as a free game for Android and iOS on Epic Games Store until December 25, 2025. You can learn more about the freebie from the video attached below.
