The 12th mystery free game for the 2025 Christmas season is, as some predicted, a well-rated indie title. It also happens to be the third indie freebie in a row, and while that could mean that Epic Games Store will switch things up for December 29, the past pattern says otherwise.
To be specific, Epic Games Store has given away these titles as the 13th mystery free game in the past few years:
- 2024 - Orcs Must Die! 3
- 2023 - Snakebird Complete
- 2022 - Dishonored - Definitive Edition (curr. $5 on Humble Bundle) and Eximus: Seize the Frontline
- 2021 - Salt and Sanctuary
- 2020 - Solitairica
Among them, three of the past free games are indie, while two can be considered AA, and only one is a AAA game. That suggests the upcoming giveaway will be an indie or an AA title. Another notable pattern from the past giveaways is that none of them are regarded strongly as narrative-heavy or open-world titles.
Of course, the good part is that all of the past Epic Games Store freebies on December 29 are well-rated. But then again, unlike the past Christmas season giveaways, there haven't been many repeated games in this year's lineup, which suggests that the upcoming giveaway could be a repeated free game.
With all these considered, 20XX is one of the strong candidates for the 13th mystery free game. It was given away by Epic Games Store two years ago, is an indie title, and has a good overall player rating. The game's not on sale either, which increases its chances of being the upcoming freebie.
The Long Dark is another good candidate for the upcoming giveaway. It fits all the other descriptions and is not on sale. Other possible titles that could be December 29 free game are Arcade Paradise, ScourgeBringer, and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.
For those who still haven't claimed the 12th mystery free game, which is SKALD: Against the Black Priory, it will be available on Epic Games Store until December 29, 2025, UTC 16:00. After that, the 13th freebie will be officially revealed.
