Samsung may make its 2022 midrange Galaxy A device a lot more compelling, especially in the imaging department. The company is reportedly planning to offer optical image stabilization (OIS) support across the entire Galaxy A range and not just limit it to the top-end models.
Optical image stabilization has been the mainstay of the flagship Galaxy S and Galaxy Note Series, but the feature has also made its way to higher rung Galaxy A's such as the Galaxy A72 and Galaxy A52. These phones offer 64 MP primary cameras while the rest of the Galaxy A series including the Galaxy A42, Galaxy A32, and Galaxy A22 make do with 48 MP sensors. With the bulk of the sales happening with Galaxy A42 and below, Samsung apparently wants to bring OIS to the masses by enabling it in all Galaxy A models from next year.
OIS offsets physical shake by moving the camera lens in the opposite direction with the help of gyro sensors thereby enabling steady photos and videos. OIS also plays an important role when it comes to low-light photography. More midrange devices such as the OnePlus Nord 2, Vivo V21 5G, Apple iPhone SE 2020, etc. come equipped with OIS, so it is only natural that Samsung would want to include this feature as standard across the board.
That being said, the inclusion of OIS is bound to make the device a bit more expensive though Samsung's camera module partners including Patron, MCNEX, and Powerlogics can be expected to benefit from this move. OIS camera prices are about 15% more expensive compared to traditional autofocus ones, so an average smartphone sales price increase of at least 3% can be expected.
Chinese OEMs have an edge over Samsung in the midrange segment with respect to pricing, but the inclusion of OIS across the board may make the Galaxy A series a lot more appealing particularly with low-light photography.
Samsung is also likely to rope in its second-stage components partner Jaeyoung Solutec for OIS module supply from Q4. Samsung Electric, which traditionally focused on flagship smartphone camera modules, is also supplying modules to Galaxy A22 devices owing to sluggish Galaxy S20 series sales last year.
