Tesla will be doubling its US factory production in the span of the next two years, pledged Elon Musk, in sync with the made-in-America push of the new White House administration.
This means that Tesla will have to go from roughly 665,000 vehicles made in the US last year, to more than 1.3 million in 2027. Given that Tesla made about 1.8 million cars in total in 2024, such a production increase in the US alone seems like a tall order.
Tesla, however, currently has production capacity for about 1.1 million vehicles a year in the US alone, so it only needs to widen that a bit. The tougher part, finding American buyers for the increased production, seems to be a calculated move by Musk.
Tesla will be announcing its cheapest vehicle, tentatively named the Model 2, later this year, and Elon knows that its comparatively low pricing could make it an instant bestseller. It is also preparing to ramp up production of the new Model Y Juniper refresh, for which many fans have been holding up their Tesla purchase.
The Model S and Model X are also scheduled for late 2025 facelifts, and Tesla is preparing to release the cheapest RWD Cybertruck this year as well, with the model already appearing in the IRS tax credit database.
The Cybercab, which shares a production platform with the Model 2, will also be produced en masse at some point in 2026, so it will really not be that hard for Musk to keep his US production doubling promise that was doled out during a handoff event at the White House.
Faced with global sales slump and vandalism challenges at home, Elon Musk held a Tesla endorsement event at the White House lawn, where he presented a price list to President Trump and picked him a red Model S Plaid to buy.
Trump pledged support for Tesla amidst the negative publicity stemming from Musk's political activism that ranges from nosediving sales to vandalism against Tesla's Supercharger stations, showrooms, or vehicles. In a display of said support, he let Musk bring all of Tesla's current models to the White House, and said he'll cut a check for a Model S Plaid that Elon said was his daily driver.
Elon then pledged doubling the made-in-America unit production to about 1.3 million in the span of two years, which wouldn't cost Tesla much else than what it had already planned for before the White House endorsement event fanfare.
