Is the Elephone U Pro worth a punt? I would say a qualified 'yes'. The fantastic 6-inch screen, large battery, voluminous and expandable storage, and good looks certainly make this handset a desirable bit of kit. On the other hand there are one or two rough edges and the main camera performance, in particular, is rather poor. And don't forget you can pick up a Moto G6 Plus here in the UK for around £260 which, if not quite as powerful or as funky, could be a safer bet.

Before I go ahead and state my conclusion I should point out an important aspect. Like many Chinese phones, the Elephone U Pro isn’t meant for the US market. As such, it does not support LTE bands, so it won’t work on the country’s major networks. If you’re in Europe like me, the phone works just fine.

My detailed review clearly implies that U2 is an expensive smartphone. The features and specifications provided doesn’t fit in with the other popular mid-range smartphone. People would tend to buy other famous brands like oppo, huawei etc. or even a used Galaxy S9 in this price tag. Therefore, my final suggestion is that the company should lower the prices to gain momentum in the market.

A very strong contender at the sub-£250 price point, Elephone's U2 is a good-looking phone with a cool pop-up selfie camera and conveniently located fingerprint sensor. Under close scrutiny some corners have been cut, including the lack of support for NFC and personal audio, relatively slow charging and a disappointing camera app. Performance and design go a long way to making up for this, however.

Elephone:

The smartphone manufacturer ELEPHONE Communication Technology Co. Ltd. was founded in China in 2006. The sales numbers are limited and so are the number of reviews. The ratings are average (as of 2016).

Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.

ARM Mali-G71 MP2: Integrated GPU that can be found e.g. in the Mediatek Helio P23 SoC with 700 or 770 MHz clock speed. Supports OpenGL ES 3.2, Vulkan 1.0, OpenCL 2.0, DirectX 11 FL11_1 and RenderScript.

ARM Mali-G72 MP3: Integrated graphics card from ARM with 3 cores based on the 2nd generation of the Bifrost architecture.

Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.

Qualcomm Adreno 510: Integrated graphics card based on the Adreno 500 architecture, like the Adreno 520 in the Snapdragon 820. Performance should be on average similar to the old Adreno 330 in the Snapdragon 801. Supports DirectX12, OpenCL 2.0, OpenGL ES 3.1 + AE.
