Xiaomi is hitting traditional automakers where it hurts. The Chinese company sold more EVs than both Ford and GM in 2024 in China, despite being in business for less than a year.
The electric SU7 sedan has proven to be a hit, propelling Xiaomi to the top of the charts and reporting 136,854 units sold last year.
For context, Ford’s Mustang Mach-E was the second best-selling EV in the US in 2024 but sold only 999 in China. Other electric models in the Detroit-based company’s stable include the F-150 Lightning and E-Transit, but they were not available in China.
GM sold 69,403 EVs across its brands in China. However, its Chinese joint partnerships performed way better, selling 33,630 and 602,952 units with Baojun and SAIC-Wulin, respectively.
Ford and GM sold about 98,000 and 114,000 units, respectively, in the US.
Xiaomi’s rise as an EV maker has been nothing short of spectacular. Its SU7, which costs less than $30,000, sold the first 100,000 units in just 229 days but took only 119 days to double them. The company will get even busier in 2025 as it aims for 350,000 deliveries. Its SU7 Pro is fully booked for the rest of the year, while the YU7 SUV will launch in June or July.
