A driverless Model Y has been caught roaming the streets of Austin for the first time. The electric SUV will be part of Tesla's pilot Robotaxi ride-share platform fleet testing there.

The public launch of Tesla's Robotaxi ride-share platform will happen on June 22, according to Elon Musk, followed by the first driverless delivery of a Model Y from the factory to the customer on June 28.

Prior to the grand unveiling, a driverless Model Y robotaxi has been filmed on the public streets of Austin for the first time. This is where Tesla chose to launch its Robotaxi platform, the logo of which sits on the side of the Model Y in the video below.

Texas is pretty liberal when it comes to regulating autonomous vehicles in that it doesn't require much else from them than what is already needed to drive regular cars in the state, like registration and insurance.

As can be seen, the Model Y that patiently waits for pedestrians to cross before it makes a left turn doesn't have a driver behind the wheel indeed. Tesla has been testing its robotaxis with an employee in the back seat just in case, though, and Musk says that this Model Y runs on a separate branch of the commercial FSD software that its other vehicles use.

Eventually, the FSD branch that the Robotaxi fleet will use upon launch, and which Tesla calls "unsupervised FSD," will be merged into the main software that is delivered over the air to all of its vehicles, enabling them to get on the platform.

Later this year, Tesla will apparently release a new FSD version that will aim for a fourfold increase in parameters, all the while it offers "super frugal use of memory bandwidth, caching exactly what is needed."

Tesla has been training Austin's police and first responders on how to respond to situations with its autonomous vehicles, and will start slow with about ten Model Y units in a geofenced area similar to how Waymo operates.

It will also have human operators whom riders can call in case of trouble, again like Waymo, so the only mystery left is the pricing for Tesla's Robotaxi platform rides, which should be announced on or prior to the June 22 launch.
