For what you're paying for the G7 17 7790, you won't be disappointed with the level of performance you can squeeze out of it. It's a gaming laptop for the everyman, who isn't concerned about showing off their street cred, or sinking hours and hours into PC gaming. It's a great first gaming laptop, from the simple, elegant design, to the specs, with a large screen for gaming, watching media, or just boring old work. It'll see you right until you decide to transition to something more serious – and inevitably, a lot more expensive. Until then, it's a reasonably priced, hardy laptop that you can run most games on although you'll have to be mindful of tweaking the settings. For just over £1,000, it's worth weighing up your options, but it's not a bad choice at all.

Dell has done a lot with this budget Alienware. However, we don’t really think they have done enough to distinguish this device from its more budget brother – the G5 – even though we tested only the 15-inch G5 15 5590. We were astonished how these devices got almost the same results in every single test we threw at them. Additionally, they are very hot on the surface and, wait for it – on the exact same spot. OK, apparently, Dell is not very creative with their new devices.

The new Dell G7 is a definite upgrade that brings a bigger and better display to the table but falls short in other ways.

Large display-sizes allow higher resolutions. So, details like letters are bigger. On the other hand, the power consumption is lower with small screen diagonals and the devices are smaller, more lightweight and cheaper.

In former years, this weight was representative for laptops with a 14-16 inch display-diagonal. Nowadays, 17 inch laptops weigh less than that.
