Reviews for the Dell G5 15 SE 5505 P89F
It's not the quietest or best-looking gaming laptop out there, but $860 USD for GeForce RTX 2060-level graphics and Core i7-like performance is hard to argue with. The value of the all-AMD G5 15 Special Edition is impressive.

The Dell G5 5505 is a competent machine for gamers. It has a sturdy build, excellent heat dissipation and loud audio capabilities. With the highest possible graphics settings in graphically demanding games, there might be some moments of lag during gameplay but with the settings slightly toned down, the games run smoothly. For first time buyers who want a budget gaming machine from the house of Dell only, this product could do the trick for them.

Plenty of ports and performance are the highlight of the Dell G5 15 Special Edition, the all-AMD model of Dell's entry 15-inch gaming laptop. It's one of many systems in the $1,000-$1,300 price range that boast 144Hz screens, but with AMD's RX 5600M discrete graphics and an AMD Ryzen 7 4800H processor, it beats the typical Intel/Nvidia combo for the money. And it's not too game-centric to use as a work or remote learning Windows laptop, where the extra CPU power comes in handy. Plus, if you can find it on sale during the monthlong Black Friday that started on Amazon Prime Day, it will be an even better buy.

The Dell G5 15 SE (5505) is an interesting gaming laptop that will no doubt be on the radar of any AMD fan. Dell's pricing is not too bad either, considering that the Radeon GPU offers gaming performance somewhere in between what an Nvidia GTX 1660 Ti and RTX 2060 would deliver, and these are usually seen in laptops priced at around the Rs. 1 lakh mark. The Dell G5 15 SE (5505) also offers a comfortable keyboard, nice aesthetics, and a 120Hz refresh rate display going by the current variants being sold in India. A few things to keep in mind are that the screen brightness is on the lower side, and the fact that it runs very hot when gaming.

Lisa Gade reviews the 2020 Dell G5 SE (5505) with AMD Ryzen 5 4600H and Ryzen 7 4800H CPUs and Radeon RX 5600M graphics with SmartShift technology. This is an entry to mid-level 15.6” gaming laptop starting at $813. It has a full HD display, and we have the 300 nit, 144Hz option. It has an RGB zone backlit keyboard, 2 RAM slots, 2 M.2 NVMe SSD slot, plenty of ports including USB-C and an SD card slot, and is available with WiFi 6. As we’ve seem from AMD’s Zen 2 laptop platform this year, the processor offers excellent performance and good thermals.

Overall, the Dell G5 15 SE has a lot of power and puts in a competent performance when it comes to gaming on the higher end, even if it's not going to win the race. It might not need to though - performance doesn't exist in a vacuum, after all.

The Dell G5 15 SE is a winner if you’re trying to get the most amount of power for the least amount of money. This isn’t the most lean, well-built laptop out there, and I look forward to seeing how Dell refines its edge in future versions. But as it stands, I recommend opting for this over most other gaming laptops close to $1,000. Its fast components make for a downright enjoyable gaming experience with minimal compromises, and it includes some high-end features like a fast refresh rate display and a speedy RAM and NVMe M.2 SSD combo that keeps it quick on its feet for most tasks. At this price point, Dell is running the show.

The Dell G5 15 SE (2020) is a great mainstream gaming laptop thanks to its wild CPU performance, awesome battery life and bright 15.6-inch display. However, its GPU could certainly have been stronger, and no one wants a chunky chassis or shrill speakers.

A capable and affordable gaming laptop, the Dell G5 15 SE checks plenty of the right boxes. But some questionable design and feature choices keep it from standing out.

Overall, the Dell G5 15 SE is a really great laptop for its $1200 (well under $900, for a Ryzen 5 4600H-based system) retail price. We asked more out of it in this review than we might have otherwise, just because Ryzen 4000 is a new platform technology. Still, it's impressive to see what happens with this machine when we cut out one of its key selling points. If you buy one of these budget gaming beasts, let it be for its outstanding performance value in games using its discrete graphics and its outstanding world-beating processor power, not because you might want to play games and hobble its performance for the sake of a little extra battery life.

Overall, we think Dell hit it out of the park with the new G5 15 SE. This all-AMD budget blockbuster has all of the gaming essentials: a fast processor, a powerful GPU, and a 144 Hz display. Extra features like the RGB backlit keyboard and eye-catching glittery lid give it a bit of a gamer motif that might look a little out of place in a business meeting, but it's subdued enough that we would personally have no issues toting this thing around. Gamers on a budget who want class-leading mobile CPU performance with plenty of graphics and gaming chops should put the Dell G5 15 SE on their short list.

15-inch display variants are the standard and are used for more than half of all laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, often allows high resolutions and thus offers rich details on the screen, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact - simply the standard compromise.
