Crossy Road Rush launches on November 5 exclusively on Apple Arcade

What began in 2014 as a Frogger homage featuring a hopping chicken is getting a new spin-off – and this one will be exclusive to Apple users. Apple Arcade and Australian studio Hipster Whale have jointly announced “Crossy Road Rush”. The game launches on November 5 exclusively on Apple Arcade, and subscribers can already pre-order it on the App Store. 9to5Mac gives the exact launch time: 4 p.m. Pacific Time, which means 1 a.m. on November 6 in Germany.
More adventure, same look
Visually, everything remains familiar: blocky voxel characters, bright colors, and the animals of the Crossy Road crew. In terms of gameplay, however, Hipster Whale goes further than the original and Crossy Road Castle. The official announcement trailer promises dodging, flinging, and smashing – the goal is to drive an angry Octoboss out of Crossy Cove and free your captured friends. Combat and exploration are also part of the mix, adding more structure than endlessly hopping across roads and rivers.
What's included? Adventure mode features 50 handcrafted levels, while a survival mode with a global leaderboard provides a daily challenge, as Pocket Gamer summarizes. You can play solo or with up to four players, both locally and online. Controllers are supported, and the game is rated for ages 4 and up on the US App Store – a classic family-friendly title, then.
Why Apple Arcade?
Hipster Whale knows the platform well. Crossy Road Castle launched exclusively on Apple Arcade in 2020, followed in 2021 by Crossy Road+, an Arcade version of the original. Yet the subscription model is actually the opposite of what made the studio successful: Crossy Road was free and funded by advertising and optional purchases, while Apple Arcade has neither ads nor in-app purchases.
For Apple, this is a win – one familiar name does more to attract subscribers than ten new ones nobody knows. Anyone already paying for Apple Arcade will get a game in early November that is well suited to a quick session between other activities or an evening on the couch with four players. Those without a subscription, however, are out of luck: no version for Android or consoles has been announced.
