China's experimental maglev train hits record 497 mph in just 5.3 seconds

Engineers in China continue to push the boundaries of ground transport, with an experimental magnetic levitation vehicle accelerating from a standstill to roughly 497 mph (800 km/h) in just over five seconds. The trial, carried out by Donghu Laboratory on a 0.62-mile test track in Hubei province, marks the third time in six months that the roughly 2,500-pound craft has broken its own records, following earlier runs that reached 404 mph (650 km/h) in June and 433 mph (697 km/h) in July.
Unlike conventional trains, the vehicle uses magnetic levitation rather than wheels, so no surface friction slows it down. Coils lining the track generate shifting electromagnetic fields that both lift and propel the craft forward, essentially allowing it to function as an enormous, precisely tuned slingshot. Maintaining stability at such extreme speed demands extraordinary precision; track deviations are limited to only 0.5 millimeters. The trial also demonstrated safe deceleration from extreme speeds, with the vehicle reportedly slowing from 497 mph to a controlled stop in just over 656 feet (200 meters).
Despite the impressive numbers, experts stress that a commercial, passenger-ready model remains far off in light of the cost, energy demands and safety hurdles involved in scaling the technology. For now, engineers see short-term applications in launching rockets or military aircraft, where reducing reliance on onboard fuel could prove valuable, alongside potential uses in industrial transport and elevator systems.
