As OpenAI announced on its blog on November 13, the company is officially introducing a group chat feature for ChatGPT. It allows up to 20 people to work with the AI in a shared conversation. The goal is to move ChatGPT beyond a personal assistant and make it a tool for group collaboration.
Group chats with AI can be useful in a wide range of situations – from creative brainstorming and planning sessions to organizing trips with friends or working on school and office projects. Everyone in the chat can contribute simultaneously, while ChatGPT actively offers suggestions, summarizes discussions, or answers questions. The AI decides when it is helpful to respond, but can always be prompted directly using "@ChatGPT."
Nearly all familiar ChatGPT features are available in group chats – including web browsing, image and file uploads, image generation, and voice input. Users cannot manually choose the AI model, as the feature runs on GPT-5.1 Auto, which automatically selects the best model depending on the user's plan. For privacy reasons, ChatGPT does not access personal memories of individual users during group conversations.
Easy to use
Using the group chat feature is simple. Any existing or new conversation can be turned into a group by clicking the person icon. Invitations are shared via a link, and first-time participants create a small profile with their name, username, and picture. If a one-on-one chat is turned into a group, ChatGPT automatically creates a copy to preserve the original conversation.
Currently in testing
The feature is currently being tested in four countries: Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Taiwan. It is available to all user tiers – Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Based on feedback, OpenAI plans to roll it out globally in stages.
