Sony just announced the WH-1000XM6 as its latest pair of premium headphones, and while it brings new features and an updated design, it also comes with a higher price tag. If you aren't willing to spend that much on a pair of headphones, then you might want to buy the older but still capable Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones which are now significantly cheaper thanks to a discount.
The previous generation Sony headphones are down to $299.99 on Amazon, 25% off the launch price of $399.99. The limited-time discount applies to the Black and Silver color options of the headphones. The Midnight Blue variant is more expensive at $348.
Although the Sony WH-1000XM5 is three years old already, they are still a pretty good pair of over-the-ear headphones. The headphones have eight microphones and two processors for noise cancellation and crystal clear calls. They also have wear detection, support for Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa, and Bluetooth Multipoint. There's also support for LDAC, spatial audio with head tracking, and the ability to connect them to a supported Sony Bravia TV for a wireless Dolby Atmos experience.
Pairing is easy as the WH-1000XM5 supports Google Fast Pair and Windows Swift Pair. The headphones also have a battery life of 30 hours with noise cancellation on (40 hours with noise cancellation turned off). And when the battery is low, a quick 3-minute charge will provide 3 hours of use, or you can connect the included 3.5mm audio cable to your device for a wired connection. Unfortunately, they don't have support for USB-C audio like the Sonos Ace.
