Just a few years ago, smartphones with a good main camera and perhaps an additional wide-angle lens dominated even the high-end segment. But then manufacturers began to optimize their camera systems further and further, improving image quality with additional sensors and telephoto cameras for zooming.
Can the more affordable phone impress with good photos?
Motorola's Edge 70 Max is not an absolute top-tier phone, but it caters to the interesting price range between 650 and 900 US$, where you can find very fast phones with good cameras that usually forgo some high-end features.
The Motorola phone can certainly take good photos, thanks to a main camera with a 50-megapixel sensor from Sony, the Lytia 710.
In daylight, it produces very sharp images with plenty of detail and balanced exposure. And even in low light, there is no need to worry about image quality dropping too much. In this respect, the Edge 70 Max can certainly compete with significantly more expensive phones.
Video quality and zoom capabilities of the Motorola phone
The main camera also produces good videos, which can be recorded at resolutions up to 4K at up to 60 fps.
Its zoom capabilities, on the other hand, are less impressive: There is no telephoto camera with a longer focal length, so you have to rely on the main camera's digital zoom. This works reasonably well, as our test images show. At 20x magnification, however, the image looks heavily and artificially smoothed.
The selfie camera on the front is also of good quality and takes nice photos.
Our verdict on the Edge 70 Max's cameras
Overall, the Edge 70 Max's camera system is somewhat more basic than those of true high-end phones. Nevertheless, it can take nice pictures, even if its zoom capabilities are limited.
