A camouflaged Tesla Model Y has been spotted in India as the company tests the electric SUV on public roads. Tesla is preparing to sell electric vehicles officially in the country, with the first Indian store expected to open in Mumbai.

Keen-eyed observers have provided evidence that Tesla is getting closer to officially selling its wares in India. Reddit user shameelck posted a photo of a camouflaged Tesla Model Y parked in front of a store. However, the poster did not reveal where the car was spotted.

Tesla is undergoing the certification steps required to offer Model Y and Model 3 in the largest country by population. It submitted the eighth test permit in March 2025.

X (formerly Twitter) user @ashishpol86 uploaded two short clips showing a speeding Model Y on an expressway in Mumbai. The electric SUV was also camouflaged as the American EV maker conducted public tests.

Tesla has reportedly secured showroom facilities near the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai and Delhi. It has been filling roles in vehicle service, sales, customer support, and operations. The flurry of pre-launch activities comes after CEO Elon Musk met with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi earlier in the year.

India presents a good opportunity for Tesla as it tries to reverse a global sales slump. It will start delivering the Cybertruck in the Middle East before the end of 2025, although the pickup truck remains banned in some European countries.
