CATL beats Tesla Megapack to a massive 6.25 MWh storage with first zero-degradation guarantee and 20-year warranty
As if Tesla's Megapack business didn't have enough competition in China, it now has to face one of the world's biggest energy storage system by the largest battery maker, CATL.
Called Tianheng, the container storage system offers 430 Wh/L energy density in its LFP cells, returning a record 6.25 MWh capacity. For comparison, Tesla's Megapacks can store up to 3.9 MWh, while they come with a 15-year capacity retention warranty.
CATL's research into long-life battery technology, however, has allowed it to find a better balance between performance and endurance so that it can up the ante with 20-year capacity-retention warranty for the Tianheng energy storage system.
What's more, CATL gives what it says is the world's first zero-battery-degradation guarantee for such a system in 5 years of usage.
CATL is increasingly setting itself apart with its long-life battery research that aims to last the lifetime of the vehicle or storage system they are used in. Lately, it detailed an LFP battery it supplied to China's largest electric bus manufacturer. That one also offers zero-degradation guarantee for 1,000 charge-discharge cycles, and comes with a 15-year warranty.
For electric cars, CATL currently supplies swappable battery packs with 12 years of warranty, but recently entered a partnership with NIO to develop EV cells with a 15-year warranty. This will boost a used electric car market that has to face more than 20 million EVs coming out of warranty by 2030.
