Black Myth: Wukong to get an expansion soon, investor says in an interview
Black Myth: Wukong, which is probably one of the biggest launches of 2024, has already broken several records within two weeks of release. The game managed to amass millions of players within a surprisingly short time, and it shows no signs of slowing down.
According to the latest Bloomberg report, Black Myth: Wukong has sold 18 million copies already, which has generated over $700 million in revenue. In the same report, Hero Games, Game Science's biggest external shareholder, hinted that an expansion is underway.
Daniel Wu from Hero Games said that players won’t have to wait for long to see what’s next for the series as the development of the expansion has begun.
“Game Science is working on an expansion to Wukong, which will give it a chance to monetize the game a second time. 2022’s Elden Ring, a title with similar play style and design, has shown how the release of an expansion — this year’s Shadow of the Erdtree — can spur a fresh flurry of sales for the original,” Wu told Bloomberg.
Further, Wu also said that with the expansion, Black Myth: Wukong would likely sell more than 30 million copies over its lifetime.
In case you missed it, Black Myth: Wukong was released on August 19th. At the moment, the game is available on PC and PlayStation 5. While there have been talks about the game being released on Xbox Series X and S, we don’t have any official confirmation yet.
Last month, Microsoft issued a statement, that made it seem like the game will be released on Xbox but did not provide a date or even an estimation. Since then, there have been speculations about an exclusivity deal with PlayStation 5. If Black Myth: Wukong is rolled out on the Xbox consoles, the sales are likely to get another boost - but this launch remains to be confirmed.
