BYD Shark pickup: Measuring an imposing 5.50 meters (18 feet) long and offering a 2.5-ton towing capacity, the new plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is taking aim at the diesel-dominated pickup market. The Chinese automotive giant is bringing its first partially electric pickup to Europe to challenge established combustion-powered rivals. Here's a complete overview of the BYD Shark's range, charging times, specifications, and equipment.

The European pickup market has traditionally been dominated by conventional diesel models. BYD now aims to shake up that hierarchy with the Shark. The automaker is bringing its first partially electric pickup truck to the continent. Measuring nearly 5.50 meters (18 feet) in length, the electrified Shark features a spacious double cab and is built on a newly developed off-road platform.

The official European launch of the BYD Shark is scheduled for the second half of 2026. The BYD Shark's all-wheel-drive powertrain differs significantly from that of conventional hybrid vehicles, as the Shark is designed as a true plug-in hybrid (PHEV). It combines two electric motors with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine. The front axle is powered by a 231 hp electric motor, while the rear axle features a 204 hp electric motor. Together, they deliver an impressive combined output of 436 hp and 650 Nm of torque.

The BYD Shark accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.7 seconds. The four-cylinder gasoline engine produces 150 hp and primarily operates as a generator to supply electricity to the battery or the electric motors. For commercial users and lifestyle customers alike, the hard facts matter most. The BYD Shark offers an impressive towing capacity of 2,500 kilograms (5,512 pounds) and a payload of up to 790 kilograms (1,742 pounds).

Its 1,200-liter cargo bed provides ample space for heavy equipment or outdoor gear. Power comes from BYD's in-house 32.2 kWh LFP Blade Battery, the largest battery currently offered in the pickup segment. It enables the BYD Shark to travel up to 90 kilometers (56 miles) on electric power alone according to the WLTP standard. With its 60-liter fuel tank filled, the total driving range increases to as much as 675 kilometers (419 miles).

BYD rates the pickup's weighted combined fuel consumption at 3.5 liters per 100 kilometers. With a depleted battery, fuel consumption rises to 9.6 liters per 100 kilometers. The BYD Shark supports DC fast charging at up to 55 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 30 to 80 percent in 21 minutes. For AC charging, the pickup supports three-phase charging at up to 11 kW. A faster 22 kW onboard charger would have been highly desirable.

The BYD Shark also includes a practical feature for tradespeople and campers. Power outlets integrated into the cargo bed allow users to draw electricity directly from the vehicle. This Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function delivers up to 6 kW of output, making it possible to operate heavy-duty power tools or kitchen appliances away from the grid.

The battery is permanently integrated into the ladder-frame chassis, increasing torsional rigidity while protecting the battery cells during demanding off-road driving. Inside, BYD moves away from the utilitarian feel typically associated with pickup trucks.

The Shark's cockpit resembles that of a modern premium SUV. Behind the steering wheel sits a 10.25-inch digital instrument display, while a head-up display projects key information onto the windshield. The center of the dashboard is dominated by a rotating 15.6-inch touchscreen.

The BYD Shark comes equipped with vegan leather seats, as well as heated and ventilated front seats. A completely flat floor provides generous rear legroom. A Dynaudio sound system with twelve speakers handles audio duties, while numerous driver assistance systems, including adaptive cruise control and a 360-degree camera, are included as standard. All exact dimensions and weight specifications of the BYD Shark can be found in the graphic below.
