CES 2018 | Asus presents affordable ZenFone Max Plus with high-end features

The ZenFone Max Plus integrates the Face Unlock function, found on high-end models, which complements the fingerprint scanner for additional security measures. Also included is a 4,130 mAh battery that should provide longer-lasting usage time.

Although Asus is well known for the PC branch, its smartphone business is expanding quickly by the year. Among the multitude of devices presented at CES 2018, Asus exhibited the upcoming ZenFone Max Plus (M1) that integrates high-end features into a mid-range model.

One high-end feature that can be found on Apple’s Iphone X or the Samsung Galaxy S8 is the facial recognition technology, dubbed Face Unlock on the ZenFone Max Plus. For additional security, there’s a fingerprint scanner on the back. Asus also provides a 4,130 mAh battery that allows the smartphone to run for 13 hurs straight in video playback mode. The ZenFone Max Plus comes with a 5.65-inch 2,160 x 1,080 display. It is powered by a Mediatek MT6750 octa-core SoC coupled with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage, while the video processing is handled by the ARM Mali-T860 MP2 GPU. On the imaging side, Asus added a 16 MP sensor on each of the phones faces. Users will be pleased to find a headphone jack on this model.

The North American market will only get the black and bluish silver color options with an MSRP of US$229. The device measures 6.01 x 2.87 x 0.35 inches, weighs 5.64 oz, and comes pre-installed with Android 7.0 Nougat. Asus mentioned it will launch a 4 GB RAM / 64 GB storage variant, as well, but no pricing or availability info was supplied.
