A new OTA update is rolling out to Asus Zenfone 5Z, which focuses on improving the camera capabilities of the smartphone. This update adds support for RAW capture, Panorama mode, and a host of other camera-related improvements, improved Wi-Fi stability, and bug fixes.

The Asus Zenfone 5Z is already out in select markets such as India and has managed to undercut the current reigning champion in the affordable flagship segment, the OnePlus 6, by a fair margin. While the handset has already received a major software update in July, users of the Zenfone 5Z are now being treated to another OTA update that brings a host of improvements and new functionality to the camera experience. The update's changelog reads —

  • Enable RAW file support
  • Enable Panorama feature
  • Add on/off button for EIS
  • Enable flash feature in Pro mode
  • Filters upgraded to Real Time Filters
  • Camera Improvements
  • Improve HDR functionality
  • Improve camera stability
  • Improve auto exposure
  • Improve photo sharpness
  • Improve auto focus functionality
  • Improve slow motion quality and file size(720p)
  • Boost audio quality in video to 192kbps bitrate

Apart from the above, the update also brings improved Wi-Fi stability and bug fixes. What would please many users is that this update now allows RAW capture, which allows non-destructive manual post-processing in image editing software. The Zenfone 5Z's camera software was conspicuous for the lack of a Panorama mode, something that is pretty much standard on most smartphones, so it is good that this update finally brings that feature. The other camera-related improvements should further improve the functionality of the 12 MP (primary) + 8 MP (wide-angle) Sony IMX363 dual camera setup.

The Asus Zenfone 5Z was first announced during MWC 2018 and was announced for the Indian market in July. At ₹29,999 (US$438, pre-discount), the 6GB/64GB variant is the cheapest Snapdragon 845-powered phone so far and is also available in 6GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB versions. The Zenfone 5Z comes with a host of features such as 5-magnet stereo speakers, support for DTS:X HiRes audio, a ton of AI-aided functions, a 5.2-inch FHD+ notched-Super IPS display, and a 3,300 mAh battery. The phone runs on Android 8.0 Oreo overlaid with ZenUI 5.0. Those looking to buy the Asus Zenfone 5Z in the US can now pre-order the smartphone from Amazon.
