Asus Zenbook UX303UA-FN121T

The Asus Zenbook UX303UA-FN121T is a 13.3-inch subnotebook powered by Intel's Core i5-6200U (Skylake) dual-core processor, which is a mid-range model with enough computing power for most application scenarios. The CPU belongs to the frugal ULV processors with a base speed of 2.3 GHz, which can be boosted to 2.7 GHz (both cores) or 2.8 GHz (one core only) via Turbo. Storage in this model is a 2.5-inch hard drive from Hitachi with 5400 RPM and a capacity of 500 GB. The Chiclet keyboard is conventional. None of the major keys has a reduced size. The cursor keys are smaller than usual, but are isolated in a way that they are still easy to locate when required. The touchpad is a generous size for a 13.3 inch laptop with a shiny, reflective bezel around the edge. The mouse buttons are integrated into the touchpad, but clicks are accurately detected without any issues. The touchpad coating is nice and smooth, which makes it easy for the fingers to glide across. This model comes with an Intel HD Graphics 520 GPU, which supports DirectX 12 and clocks at up to 950 MHz. The battery runtime is about 7 hours during WiFi browsing, which is a good rate. The model comes with the following standard accessories: three USB 3.0 ports, a brightness sensor, an SD card reader, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi, an HD Webcam, and built-in stereo speakers.

Skylake upgrade. The Zenbook still manages decent battery runtimes even with Skylake innards. However, that involves making compromises compared with the Broadwell models. The poor screen will not win any awards.

With its strong performance, premium design and good battery life for less than $900, the ZenBook UX303UA is an excellent value. We also like the comfortable keyboard and colorful display, although the sound quality could be better. If you're willing to spend a little more, you can get the slimmer and lighter nontouch Dell XPS 13 for $1,149, which has similar specs to the Asus and longer battery life.

There is strength in tranquility. The Zenbook UX303 series has been available since 2014 and Asus now ships the devices with Skylake processors from Intel. Our review unit with an i7 CPU can score with quiet operation and low temperatures, but can the performance convince as well?

Long lasting. A Skylake processor implies higher performance in the Zenbook UX305 without negative impact on the battery runtimes. The fast SSD, Full HD display and good keyboard remain unchanged.

Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.

Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.

Intel Core i5:

6200U: Skylake-based ULV dual-core processor for thin notebooks and ultrabooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 520 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
