It looks good, sounds good, and feels good to use. Yes, we’d like more stamina, but its power brick is small enough to take with you.

Unabashedly inspired by the 12-inch MacBook, the hybrid Asus ZenBook Flip S, while not without its minor flaws, is among the best 2-in-1 laptops you can buy right now.

The Asus ZenBook Flip S is a near-perfect laptop for someone who wants a hybrid that is very thin and very light, without sacrificing productivity power. A year or so ago a laptop like this would probably have used a Core Y/M-series processor, which just isn’t as powerful.

It’s a shame that another tech brand already burned the slogan of “Quietly Brilliant”, because that’s exactly the phrase that comes to mind these days with the new ASUS Zenbook Flip S. It’s a convertible that delivers pretty darn close to the high-level of performance and form-factor it promises - even if the inferior battery life does hold it back from being a total slam dunk.

From the outside, the Asus ZenBook Flip S is a stone-cold stunner of a laptop that will turn heads wherever you go. When you get your hands on it, though, it proves to be strictly average at best, with some noticeable flaws in battery life, a flat keyboard and a low-resolution webcam.

Asus ZenBook Flip S hands-on
Source: Trusted Reviews English Archive.org version
The Asus ZenBook Flip S is a niche addition to Asus’ ZenBook range, and it faces stiff competition from the excellent HP EliteBook x360. There’s no price information yet, but expect it to cost in excess of £1200 in the UK for a base model.

80% Asus ZenBook Flip S review: A stylish, lightweight convertible
Source: Zdnet.com English Archive.org version
There's much to admire about the Asus ZenBook Flip S. It's a light, slimline convertible laptop that will appeal to anyone who travels a lot, and proves that Asus can do more than simply cloning its rivals' designs. The price is comparable to that of rival ultraportables, while the bundled stylus and other accessories provide good value for money. With an attractive 13-inch display and desktop-level performance, the Flip S will make a good workhorse laptop for running Microsoft Office and other business software. If you're planning to run demanding workloads though, beware that battery life may suffer.

Hands-on with the ASUS ZenBook Flip S: Probably the thinnest convertible you can buy
Source: Hardware Zone English Archive.org version
It’s not difficult to see why he was so excited – the ZenBook Flip S is dashing, and measures a mere 10.9mm thick. In comparison, a convertible like the Lenovo Yoga 910 measures 14.3mm. That may not seem like a big difference on paper, but even a cursory glance at the Flip S will have you marveling at just how thin it is.

Asus Zenbook Flip S preview: Super thin convertible jam packed with top-shelf kit
Source: Pocket Lint English Archive.org version
The Zenbook Flip S is particularly fetching in the Royal Blue, which has a surprisingly ungarish gold trim. The display models were picking up fingerprints like flies, but it was a crowded event with lots of eager grubby mitts. The Smokey Grey model seemed to suffer from this slightly less but is a little bit less glam.

Comment

Model: The Asus Zenbook Flip S UX370 is an incredibly thin and light 2-in-1 device. Being a convertible, the ASUS ZenBook Flip S has opted for a 13.3-inch display panel giving consumers not only a sufficient working space but also keeping is small enough to be a comfortable hold while in tablet mode. The hinges turn 360 degrees all around so and don’t seem to take up a massive footprint. Probably the most striking thing about the Asus ZenBook Flip S UX370 and the aspect Asus is pinning its success on is its design. The bezel is 6.11 mm at its thinnest side and ASUS calls this NanoEdge. It gives an 80% screen-to-body ratio. Higher ratios are easy to attain as the screen size increases but at 13.3 inch, it’s a pretty good feat. Not only is the Asus ZenBook Flip S UX370 incredibly thin, it's also impressively light as well, weighing just 1.1 kg. The convertible features a body out of aerospace-grade aluminum, an ultra-thin vapor-chamber cooling system and an 'ErgoLift' hinge, which allows the screen to flip 360 degrees, whilst also remaining incredibly slim. To make sure this hinge is as robust as possible, Asus subjects it to a 20,000-cycle open-and-close test, so it's unlikely this hybrid is going to snap in two anytime soon.

Under the hood, the Asus Zenbook Flip S UX370 features up to an Intel Core i7 CPU (7th generation), up to 16 GB LPDDR3 RAM, and a PCIe 3.0 SSD with a capacity of up to 1 TB. The ZenBook Flip S uses a specially-designed high-capacity 39 Wh lithium-polymer battery that has been created to be as thin as possible, without compromising on battery life. Asus claims it has an 11.5-hour battery life, and that it uses fast-charge technology to reach 60% from empty in just 49 minutes. Every convertible has to come with a stylus. It just makes life a lot easier, especially, while dealing with multimedia editing. The ASUS ZenBook Flip S has one such device, it’s called the ASUS Pen. Its design isn’t outlandish and it isn’t heavy which makes it easier to use over prolonged periods of time. Windows came out with Windows Ink last September and since then using a stylus with a Windows machine has become all the more intuitive. As for portability, there aren’t many ports which can fit into a chassis this thin. So the user has just the two USB Type-C ports. However, the user can squeeze out 45 watts of power from Type-C and user can even daisy-chain two displays. As for the other connectivity options, the ZenBook Flip S has 802.11ac Wi-Fi with a peak transfer rate of 867 Mbps and Bluetooth 4.1. The Zenbook flip is a perfect alternative for the SurfaceBook, among many.

Intel HD Graphics 620: Integrated GPU (GT2) found on some Kaby-Lake CPU models (15 W ULV series).

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.

The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.
