Lookalike. Asus introduces a new 14-inch laptop with a touchscreen, upper-range configuration, and stylish looks dubbed VivoBook S451LB-CA072H. The bundle made a good impression in the test, though we expected more from the screen and storage device.

65% A touchscreen for less, but compromises, too
Source: CNet English Archive.org version
The display, keyboard, and touchpad on this Asus VivoBook are essentially phoning it in, and it's (relatively) heavy, but it'll get you moving about the Internet, play your HD movies (although not at full-HD resolutions), and help you get work done -- thanks to a fairly responsive touchscreen -- for just $700. At this price, you'd be hard pressed to find a real gem.

Asus VivoBook S451LN

14 inch touchscreen laptops are becoming more common, especially among users who find 15 inch laptops too cumbersome to lug around. The screen on the Asus Vivobook S451LN boasts a multitouch feature that allows up to 10 finger contacts, and is touted to be extra sensitive and extra smooth, reacting to the slightest touch without lag. The glossy display has a modest resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and is sufficient for all basic tasks.

The 500 GB hard drive is partitioned into two parts, one for data and one for OS files. The laptop runs a 64 bit Windows 8 OS, which is pretty standard. At the heart of the machine is a 1.6 GHz Intel Core i5-4200U processor with 6 GB of RAM and Nvidia GeForce GT740M graphics card. The laptop is 2.4 cm thick, but weighs only 2.2 kg, which is considered pretty normal considering its size.

There is a built in DVD player and burner for those who prefer the more traditional way of data sharing. However, this extra feature contributes to its thick built. The overall body of the laptop is tough and firm. The lid is matte black and the keyboard side is matte light grey. This laptop would be ideal for those looking for a standard device with a responsive touchscreen.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.

Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.

Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.

14.00:

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

72.5%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
