Reviews for the Asus N56VM
Cheaper. After the review of the N56VZ with the powerful GeForce GT 650M, we will now have a look at the cheaper model with a GeForce GT 630M.

Archive.org versionBeneath the stylish exterior of the N56V, there lies a sleeping beast; a beast with a roar loader than any others that lay before it. That beast is a brand new Intel Core i7-3720QM 2.6GHz processor, one of the chip giant's third generation Core CPUs.

Archive.org versionIf you want a powerful multimedia laptop the N56 should be on your short list. It’s admittedly expensive, but no more so that similar competition. Also, if ASUS acts as it has in the past, there will be a base-trim model available within a few months offering an entry-level Ivy Bridge quad or an Ivy Bridge dual-core. This hypothetical PC would be a great value.

Archive.org versionActually, we're eager to try out more Ivy Bridge portables, period. There's a flood coming from Asus and other vendors, but with its blazing performance and first-rate screen and keyboard, the Asus N56VM has set the bar high.

Archive.org versionFrom the moment I first opened the package and pulled out the N56VM, I have been impressed with ASUS’ latest hardware. The silver palm rest is a nice change of pace from all the black laptops I’ve tested during the past few years, the keyboard is comfortable to use, and the display is a great improvement over all the low quality 1366x768 displays we—and our readers—have been complaining about.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M:
Multiple models based on various chips of the Fermi generation. Specifically, the GT 630M exists in GF108/GF106/GF116 variants, but are all essentially renamed GeForce GT 540M or 555M GPUs. A 28nm GF117 variant exists as well with reduced power consumption.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
3720QM: An Ivy Bridge-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4000 GPU running at 650-1250 MHz on a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
