A more down-to-Earth GX700. Take away the water cooling capabilities of the GX700 and you're left with a lighter and wholly capable system in the form of a G701. While performance is where we expect it to be for a high-end gaming machine, the system still suffers from many of the same drawbacks as its ROG series siblings.

The ASUS G701 is loaded with extremely high-end hardware. In almost every aspect, it's a direct competitor to most custom desktops. Its CPU is a top of the line mobile Intel Core i7 with overclocking support. Our unit came with 64GB of DDR4, a 1TB Samsung SM951 RAID 0 array, and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M with 8GB of VRAM. The G701 is the crème de la crème of high-performance mobile notebooks, and can handle pretty much everything thrown its way.

Trimmed for performance. For extremely demanding gamers that find the performance of the 17-inch meteor G752 (GeForce GTX 1060 & GTX 1070) insufficient, Asus offers the G701, which is equipped with Nvidia's top-of-the-line model, the GeForce GTX 1080. We put the overclocked high-end notebook through its paces.

The combination of an overclocked processor and the beefiest single GPU that money can buy is a surefire formula for good gaming performance. The Asus RoG G701VI is a testament to that; it was the fastest gaming notebook we’ve tested thus far with a single GPU, an impressive stat when you consider the number of expensive gaming notebooks that have passed through our hands.

A great machine in isolation, but similar rivals offer more for less. If it comes down in price, however, it might be worth revisiting.

The Asus ROG G701VI is an old-school gaming laptop. Huge, heavy and unabashed in its attempt to cram maximum performance into a 17.3in form factor, it is designed to appeal exclusively to hardcore enthusiasts willing to spend big.

The $3,499 Asus ROG G701VI is one of those laptops that has to be seen to be believed. The system's gray-and-orange design sets it apart from the scores of laptops clad in red and black. But beyond the aesthetics, this system is kick ass, packing an overclockable 7th-generation Intel Kaby Lake processor and an Nvidia GTX 1080 GPU under its alluring chassis. It that's not enough, its pair of PCIe SSDs are some of the fastest I've encountered, and you get a lovely display with Nvidia G-Sync and 178-degree viewing angles. However, for the price, I would expect the system to have a configurable RGB keyboard like its cheaper cousins. And it would be nice if Asus could deliver louder, richer audio..

Gaming laptops are finally catching up with the performance of desktop graphics cards. The ASUS G701VI is an excellent gaming laptop for those who wants style and raw power in a slim package. The laptop is light for its size, and the 120Hz display is an added bonus for super-smooth gameplay that’s backed by the NVIDIA GTX 1080 GPU.

The Asus ROG G701VI is a mighty beast and in some respects it is over the top. We love the combination of Core i7 CPU and GTX 1080 GPU but see no need for 64GB of expensive DDR4 memory. The dual Toshiba SSDs in RAID are superb however it is easy to argue that RAID 0 is an accident that is waiting to happen.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Incorporated, a Taiwanese multinational company, produces motherboards, graphics cards, optical drives, PDAs, computer monitors, notebook computers, servers, networking products, mobile phones, computer cases, computer components, and computer cooling systems. The company's 2007 revenues reached US$6.9 billion. ASUS also produces components for other manufacturers. The Eee PC initiated the netbook boom in 2008.
In the notebook sector, Asus had a global market share of about 11% from 2014-2016, making it the fourth largest laptop manufacturer. In the smartphone sector, Asus is not among the Top 5 and has only a small market share (as of 2016).
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 (Laptop): Overclockable laptop graphics card based on the desktop GTX 980. Performance depends on the cooling solution and power supply.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Mobile: Pascal based laptop graphics card using GDDR5 graphics memory. Should offer a similar performance to the deskto GTX 1080. However, there is also a more power efficient "Max-Q" version that performs worse than the normal GTX1080 and is used in thin and light laptops.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
6820HK: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Kaby Lake:
i7-7820HK: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture running at 2.9 - 3.9 GHz. It is the second fastest model of the consumer H-series in the beginning of 2017. The chip also integrates the HD Graphics 630 GPU clocked at 350 - 1100 MHz and is manufactured in a 14 nm process (improved compared to Skylake). Compared to the Core i7-7820HQ, the 7820HK lacks business features like vPro or TXT support.
