A new republic. The thinner ROG is certainly flashier, but cut corners are inevitable. Asus calls it the quietest ultrathin gaming notebook on the market with one of the fastest solid-state drives available. What can go wrong?
80% A gaming laptop with a 4K screen made in the mould of the 15-in Macbook Pro - a great combination
Source: Tech Advisor English Archive.org version
Asus has assembled a fast and lightweight gaming laptop using the Retina MacBook Pro template, with good results. The 4K-UHD screen is perhaps more about pose than performance but at full-HD resolution this machine takes Windows games in its stride at high detail.

All that said, if you don’t mind tuning down the game settings and want to play on the move with a light laptop, then the ASUS G501 easily fits the bill. It’s impressively light for a 15-incher, and gives out silent and decent performance. I just wish that ASUS created a 13-inch version of this laptop with the same CPU, GPU and a lower-res screen.

As gaming laptops go, the ROG G501J-DS71 is a big departure from Asus's usual high-octane gaming rigs, slimming down and becoming more portable. Unfortunately, it also sacrifices a lot of the gaming performance that has marked past systems in the Republic of Gamers line. While this is probably just a bump in the road as Asus gets a handle on the ins and outs of making an ultraportable gaming laptop, this is clearly a first-iteration product. I could see things improving significantly if Asus were to release a Full HD version, but for the time being, there are a lot of rough edges that Asus needs to polish.

From a functional point of view the Chiclet keyboard is good to type on and the mouse works well enough however the layout of the keyboard is frustrating as the Power button sits where we expect to find the End key. Also, the left hand Windows key is too far inboard. These are minor points but when you are buying a premium laptop that carries a hefty price tag you are looking for perfection. Uninstall the bloatware and wait for an Nvidia driver that fixes Optimus and you’ll still be faced with a keyboard that isn’t quite right, which is frustrating.

ASUS ROG G501 review – the new standard for next generation gaming laptops
Source: Laptop Media English Archive.org version
The successful combination of thin body and high performance is next to impossible, but ASUS have done all there is to do to achieve that, and the results are nearly fantastic! As usual, we’ll start with the disadvantages – the thin body has resulted in a little instability in the keyboard panel, although it’s only noticeable if you apply excessive force. The bigger drawback is the PWM of the emitted light, which is an old problem, but ASUS haven’t solved it (at least in the Full HD version).

ASUS ROG G501 vs ZenBook Pro UX501 in-depth comparison – battle of the thin and light ‘beasts’
Source: Laptop Media English Archive.org version
Overall whichever device you choose you will not make a mistake. Weather you are a fan of the sleek light Zen design, or prefer the more aggressive black and red style of the G501, both devices offer great design, premium feel and sturdy build, thanks to the great materials used. The two also have great performance for both serious work and gaming and the cooling systems are good enough to take the heat off during the heavy work process or some hard battle on the virtual battlefield. If you want touchscreen capabilities and a slightly better sound quality you should go for the ZenBook Pro, while if you want to be sure you will be able to play the upcoming AAA game titles with no problem or you do video editing and require some extra video memory – the Republic of Gamers notebook is your choice.

Asus G501VW-BSI7N25

Despite its deceiving slim and light build, the Asus G501VW-BSI7N25 is powered by the blazing-fast 6th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 8 GB DDR4 2133MHz RAM and a 1 TB HDD 5400RPM storage. With graphics rendered by an Nvidia GeForce GTX 960M with 2 GB DDR5 VRAM, its capacity to deliver stunning visuals is unquestionable, be it in demanding games or complex applications. However, it lacks an optical drive in favor of a slim form factor. The sound quality is equally impressive thanks to SonicMaster and Bang &OlufsenICEpower audio. Its high definition webcam delivers more than average resolution and quality. This device offers plenty of interfaces including an HDMI port, 4 USB 3.0 ports as well as a USB-C Gen2/Thunderbolt 3 port for high speed data transfer. With 802.11/AC WiFi, gamers will be able to connect to online games at lightning speed. On top of that, Windows 10 OS 64-bit is pre-installed.

The ASUS G501VW offers a good package at its price point. The display is great, the SSD is phenomenal and the laptop isn’t actually that thick or heavy for a gaming device. The thermal throttling issues and quiet speakers take away a lot from the overall experience, however.

Let’s wrap it up. The G501VW offers low weight and slimmer frame, with good gaming performance for the price, good IPS display and the Thunderbolt 3 USB-C port which is not common for $800-$1000 gaming/multimedia laptops currently. It does uses a PWM brightness control noticeably and thermals and CPU/GPU clocks algorithm isn’t the best, resulting in GPU throttling under Furmark + Prime95 load (but it’s better in games).

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.

Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.

Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.

Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M: Upper mid-range graphics card of the GeForce GTX 900M series.

» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.

4720HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.

6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.

69.53%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
