67% Archos 101 G9 Turbo ICS review
Source: PC Pro English Archive.org version
Ultimately, the Archos 101 G9 Turbo ICS is powerful for the money, but there’s no getting away from the fact that its £280 price is only marginally cheaper than two other excellent tablets: the 16GB iPad 2 can now be had for £329, and the Sony Tablet S has fallen as low as £299. With both offering far superior design and displays, the Archos’ only real trump card is power. If you want a powerful tablet with the flexibility of Android you may be won over, but with Ice Cream Sandwich arriving on the Tablet S at the end of April, we know where we’d put our money.

With a dual-core processor running at 1.5GHz, Archos’ 10.1in G9 Turbo is one of the fastest tablets around, on paper at least. But it’s not the best designed – the plastic case feels cheap next to other Androids, and the cheaper TN screen isn’t as richly coloured as some rivals.

The G9 101 is not without some niggling annoyances but it still represents decent value if you want a tablet that plays HD video in any format. The stand and 3G dongle are simple ideas that make the G9 rather versatile too. The only reason I can’t give it more of a recommendation is the Flash problem and the Biblically long recharging time. Here's to the next firmware fix.

Without a doubt, this is the most capable Android Honeycomb video player currently available. Format support is excellent, the screen's decent and battery life compares fairly well with more expensive tablets. The power's there too - its dual-core 1GHz processor able to handle high bit-rate 1080p content with ease. What's wrong, then? It's the design. The plastic body just doesn't feel as nice as any of the pricier models, and several on-body bits get in the way while you're holding it. When it's just £60 cheaper than glossier tabs, you really need to care about its advanced video skills for it to be a good buy.

Finally, anyone not diametrically opposed to Apple from the get-go should at least look at the iPad 2. Unlike with phones, where Android and iOS have a balanced set of pros and cons, the iPad is still far ahead of Android tablets in terms of polished features and number of optimized apps available.

Archos: The French manufacturer Archos S.A. was founded in 1988. While they initially produced products such as MP3 players, they have started producing laptops, smartphones, and tablets in 2009.

The world market shares are small, but there are many reviews on Archos smartphones and tablets. While the ratings were below average in the early years, they have become better by 2016.

These graphics cards are not suited for Windows 3D games. Office and Internet surfing however is possible.

NVIDIA GeForce ULP (Tegra 2): In Tegra 3 SoC integrated ultra low power GPU. Depending on the model clocked at 300 to 400 MHz.

NVIDIA Tegra:

2 (250): SoC (System on a Chip) with a integrated Corex A9 Dual-Core, GeForce ULP and other dedicated subprocessors (Audio, Video).

8.00:

Large smartphones and a few small tablets are available for this display size. Unlike most smartphones, you can see more on the screen, more details and use larger resolutions. Such formats are better for people with defective vision. However, such devices are no longer easy to fit in a pocket, and they are probably not quite light either.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

69.63%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
