New leaked photos reportedly show Apple running iPad-class silicon inside its cloud servers, with a modular, field-replaceable design unlike anything from traditional server vendors.

Images shared by X user @hsuchingpo show the hardware behind Apple's Private Cloud Compute server, built around the M5 chip. The photos show a rack-mount enclosure containing multiple compute modules, each mounted on a PCIe-style card with blue ejector latches for hot-swap servicing, alongside a service diagram listing 14 numbered board positions with individual Apple part numbers (APNs).

A closer shot of one module shows a single M5 package under thermal paste, with VRM circuitry along the board's lower edge and a gold edge connector for backplane insertion. The board carries an Apple-style part-number sticker (631-13397).

A wider shot of the chassis shows a fully populated server blade, with compute modules arranged across carrier bars, each holding eight boards. Two such rows are visible in the image, connected through a central heat-pipe manifold running between them. A service diagram taped inside the lid lists 14 numbered board positions (0–13), each with its own APN, suggesting that the full chassis may not be limited to the two rows shown or that the diagram does not map one-to-one to a symmetrical grid. Either way, it points to a modular design built for field replacement rather than a fixed, monolithic board.

The M5 is not as powerful as Apple's workstation-class chips, such as the M3 Ultra, but its efficiency profile allows several units to be packed closely together in one enclosure without significant thermal concerns. Apple's PCC, its dedicated cloud infrastructure for AI processing, uses device-class silicon rather than conventional server CPUs, extending the same on-device privacy model to cloud-scale processing.

As with any unverified leak of this nature, the images should be treated as depicting a possible engineering or preproduction build. Final production hardware, board layout, and specifications may differ.
