Apple Maps on the web is now available in public beta, with "Look Around" and more features slated for a future release
Apple has introduced a public beta of Apple Maps on the web, finally expanding beyond mobile devices. The browser-based version allows users worldwide to access core mapping functionalities directly from their desktops or laptops. While Google Maps started out on the web, Apple never made a move in that direction, until now, that is.
The company says that the initial rollout will focus on navigation tools. Users can access turn-by-turn directions for driving and walking. Local search capabilities are also improved. Individuals can search for points of interest like restaurants or shops and view details like photos, ratings, and business hours directly within the web interface. For select restaurants, the web app allows users to order food as well, similar to Google Maps.
However, the launch isn't just about basic navigation. Apple has included curated guides for various cities, helping users discover new places and hidden gems. These guides offer recommendations tailored to specific interests, suggesting places to eat, shop, and explore.
Apple has also promised to add features like "Look Around" in the coming months, allowing users to virtually explore locations with a 3D street-level view. Additionally, the web app will further let developers integrate Apple Maps into external websites.
