Apple Mac Pro becomes speedy PC with new upgrade kit

Seven years after its launch, the 2019 Mac Pro is getting a second life as a PC. Practical Prototyping has developed a conversion kit designed to make it easy to combine the Mac Pro's case and fans with PC hardware. Since most of the components are proprietary, including the motherboard and power supply, they cannot be used with off-the-shelf PC hardware.
With the conversion kit, the Mac Pro can be equipped with a standard ATX motherboard and an ATX power supply. The case accommodates graphics cards up to 30.8 centimeters long and 14 centimeters tall, as well as a CPU air cooler with a maximum height of 14 centimeters. Alternatively, an all-in-one liquid cooler with a 240-millimeter radiator can be installed. The conversion kit has room for two hard drives, in either the 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch format.
In addition to the original case, the power button, LEDs and front fans are also retained. The Conversion Kit is aimed at customers with experience building desktop computers, as the kit requires the Mac Pro to be dismantled into its individual parts and reassembled with separately available PC components.
Pricing and availability
The Mac Pro ATX Conversion Kit is currently being funded on Kickstarter but the project has only attracted three backers so far, leaving it far short of its funding goal of CA$15,000 ($10,700). The campaign runs for another 25 days. The complete kit costs CA$699 ($499) during the Kickstarter campaign.
