The automotive market, long considered a traditional and slow-moving industry, may be on the brink of transformation. Amazon Autos, the e-commerce giant’s new platform for buying new cars, aims to bring the ease and convenience of online shopping to car purchases. The service is already live in the U.S.

Amazon first revealed plans to enter the automotive market in November 2023, and now the moment has arrived. On December 10, the company revealed that customers can now buy their next car through Amazon, although the service is currently available only in the U.S.

Hyundai serves as the exclusive launch partner for Amazon’s new platform. Customers can already browse and purchase various Hyundai models, including the latest IONIQ N and the current Tucson. Starting in 2025, additional brands like BMW and Nissan will join the lineup. While their models are already showcased on the platform, they are not yet available for purchase.

To enhance the appeal of its launch, Amazon is offering new buyers a $2,300 voucher valid through mid-January 2025. As illustrated in the map below, the service is currently available in 48 U.S. cities:

Amazon aims to make car buying more transparent, convenient and customer-friendly. The platform also offers dealers a chance to connect with a wider audience. However, purchasing a car through Amazon isn’t as seamless as typical online shopping. Vehicles aren’t delivered to your door but must be picked up from a dealership. To simplify this, Amazon suggests a nearby dealer. Current U.S. regulations prevent Amazon from handling direct sales.
