Overall the Acer Chromebook 715 is a solid notebook. It ticks all the necessary boxes expected from a device that costs R7 999, with a great battery life, efficient processor, large screen and interesting OS. If you're willing to gamble on a Chromebook, it should be this one from Acer.

Acer Chromebook 715 CB715-1WT-527F
The original Chromebook Pixel was introduced by Google as an idea of a premium Chromebook, and many brands have ever since taken serious steps to venture into this competitive landscape. Acer is not far behind in its attempt, as it introduced its very own Acer Chromebook 715. However, the trick with this product has to be its high price as compared to other Chromebooks in the current market. Some have opined that this product is definitely quite expensive for a Chromebook, but Acer has its own way of justifying the overrated price. It was said to be a valuable and expectable compensation for the impressive build quality and the top-tier performance that it features. Apart from that, Acer also reaffirmed that the Chromebook 715 has the best laptop keyboard ever.
The full-size keyboard along with a number pad and also an optional fingerprint reader to go with it has been are said to be the best two features of this product. This is mainly due to the fact that there is absolutely no other large Chromebooks out there currently which incorporates said two features. The fingerprint reader has a very accurate and responsive sensor that quickly unlocks the laptop with a high level of consistency. The Acer Chromebook 715 carries 8 GB of RAM for user convenience. As far as the build quality is concerned, the all-aluminium chassis provides a solid and smooth presentation with an excellent fit and finish. In addition, the large Gorilla Glass trackpad, which has a silky-smooth appearance, is absolutely accurate and responsive. This, of course, guarantees a totally one-of-a-kind user experience, especially for those who are new to Chromebooks.
The battery shelf has been shown to be able to stand over 10 hours on a battery test. This is by far the best news for those craving long-hour usage without having to look for a place to plug-in and charge the Chromebook. Users would be able to use it with ease without much worry about its battery longevity. Despite the standout features of the Acer Chromebook 715, it has been said to be a big and fast premium laptop marred by an underwhelming display. The display is definitely a drawback in this creation by the Acer company. The colors are said to be quite dull when compared to other Chromebooks on the market. Apart from that, the screen is also not bright enough and has a rather coarse pixel density. This is quite a drawback in terms of user experience, as it is not going to give the best display presentation with such flaws. The coarse pixel density would obviously turn out to be a not-so-pleasing experience for the user, and the lighting might just make it even worse. Therefore, the consideration of acquiring the Acer Chromebook 715 is entirely subjective depending on the need and requirement of the user, as both the features and overall experience play vital roles in it.

The Acer Chromebook 715 is perhaps the current pinnacle of Chromebooks. With a sleek and sturdy build, excellent keyboard, and powerful hardware, it is easily one of the best Chromebooks on the market. Additionally, Android app integration and a built-in Linux virtual machine (still in beta) finally make Chrome OS feel like a fully-fledged (though piecemeal) operating system.

There's a lot to like about Acer's Chromebook 715; a snappy processor, a lovely keypad - with a dedicated number pad - and premium-ish extras such as the fingerprint sensor. Then again, the screen is absolutely woeful and you should expect more from an £899 laptop - £17 more gets you an Acer Travelmate X5 and a much brighter, richer display.

Acer has a winner on its hands. The Chromebook 715 delivers strong performance, thanks to its Intel Core i5 processor. I really like the fingerprint sensor, and I appreciate the inclusion of a number pad. And lasting over 10 hours on our battery test is no small feat. The notebook's MIL-SPEC-tested aluminum chassis looks premium and can take a minor beating.

All of which means the Acer Chromebook 715 is tough to recommend. Objectively, it performs well in many areas. Acer offers alternative configurations with a slightly less powerful Intel CPU and 8GB of memory rather than 16GB at a significant savings. In value terms, that makes much more sense. We’d steer you in that direction if the Acer Chromebook 715 is on your shopping list.

With options for an i3 or i5 processor and up to 128GB of storage, this is a Chromebook that's made to get things done, especially with its 15.6 touchscreen — perfect for split-screening — and keyboard with a number pad for entering grades and other figures.

The Acer Chromebook 715 started life as a premium model targeted at a growing business market for Chrome OS devices. Along with its smaller sibling, the Chromebook 714, the 715 has a premium all-aluminum chassis built to survive drops from up to 48 inches (122 cm) and downward force up to 132 pounds (60 kg). You could also get the Chromebook 715 with a fingerprint reader, a backlit keyboard, an Intel Core i5 processor and 16GB of memory for around $750. Or, you can get a much more affordable version that dials back on the specs and extras but keeps the premium build quality, making it a fantastic choice for a home office or student Chromebook.

71.75%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
