Surround system. The new 18 inch flagship comes with the quad core processor, Intel Core i7-2630QM, and the Nvidia GeForce GT 555M graphics solution. Not only are the 16 GB RAM and the installed speedy SSD striking, but the touchpad as well. It can be removed and used as a remote control. The steep price for the notebook: 1699 euros.

The Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G may be an expensive beast of a machine, but it'll keep you entertained when the rest of the summer proves to be a washout.

The Ethos is a good all-round desktop replacement machine, and if you need that sort of all-round power in a just-about-portable form it’s a good option, but if you put portability, raw power or gaming skills above other priorities you’ll find alternatives that do a better job in each of those areas.

Battery life was about 3-3.5 hours long, which was actually more than what we'd expected to get. This is because of the switchable graphics that we just mentioned and the astonishing 8-cell battery.

Few things surprise us more than when laptop shoppers tell us that though they are planning to keep their new computer permanently chained to a desk (to essentially act as a desktop PC), they intend to buy a 13-inch (or even a 14- or 15-inch) laptop. The 18-inch Acer Aspire Ethos AS8951G is a huge multimedia powerhouse laptop with a unique removable touch-pad remote control. It's a clever idea, but one that might be ahead of its time.

The Acer Aspire Ethos 8951G has some things going for it: a full HD screen, Blu-ray playback, solid sound, and a unique removable touchpad. It's a good choice for those who crave the largest screen possible. If you can live with a 17-inch screen, the similarly-priced HP Pavilion dv7t Quad Edition offers much stronger overall performance due to its SSD and 7,200-rpm hard drive, though it lacks Blu-ray. Gamers should probably scoop up the ASUS G73SW, which offers much stronger graphics performance but much shorter battery life. Overall, the 8951G is a solid choice for those who want the freedom to control their media from a (limited) distance.

NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M:
As the successor to the GeForce GT 445M, the GT 555M is available in many different versions based on different chips (GF106, GF116, GF108) with different graphics memory (128 Bit, 192 Bit, DDR3, GDDR5) and varying core speeds.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
2630QM: Fast Quad-core processor based on the Sandy Bridge architecture with an integrated graphics card and dual-channel DDR3 memory controller. » Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
