Can $1,000 buy you a good desktop replacement notebook? Acer offers up a definite "yes" with the Aspire 9300-5005, a $949 desktop replacement that comes equipped with a 17-inch widescreen, competent processing power, and enough muscle for midrange gaming and graphics tasks. Though it lacks some of the niceties found on higher-end multimedia systems, this notebook delivers outstanding value. If you're looking for a big display and powerful performance for about $1,000, the Acer Aspire 9300-5005 is about as good as it gets.

When you factor in the cost of another 1GB of RAM to goose the system's speed, and of even a basic set of productivity apps such as Microsoft Works 8.5, it becomes clear that the 9300-5005 isn't quite a $949 notebook after all. But if you can live without some or all of these options, it's a very good deal.

Getting a laptop's price down to $999 seems to be the magic number for many shoppers, and the Acer Aspire 9300-5005 is one of the few 17-inch desktop replacements to slide in under that wire. This $999 laptop serves up plenty of extras you wouldn't expect in a budget system, including a built-in Web cam and a separate number pad, but the plodding AMD processor and a mere 1GB of RAM keep it from being suitable for gamers. Still, for a big screen without the big bucks, the Aspire 9300-5005 delivers.

The Acer Aspire 9300-5005 is a bargain for those who are looking for a desktop-like experience on a laptop. The gorgeous 17-inch screen will play a large role in your buying decision, but it also sucks up a large percentage of the $1,000 price, leaving you with below-average (thus, cheaper) components. It's ideal for those who have basic computing and media needs, such as watching an occasional DVD movie or editing family photos. Otherwise, you might want to spend more to get the Dell Inspiron E1705 (Vista) or the luxurious Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch.

DTR are mainly intended for stationary desk use, where weight and energy hunger don't matter. In return, you enjoy the advantages of high resolutions (more details, better legibility).» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.

71%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
