There’s no denying that NVIDIA’s 3D Vision technology works, although those who already wear glasses or struggle to remember to charge their phone will likely find the necessary 3D eyewear a frustration. The question we’re left asking is why Acer decided to cut corners on the optical drive, given you’d expect the company to want Aspire 5745DG owners to have access to as much 3D content as possible. With no Blu-ray option, that choice is seriously curtailed.

The 15.6-inch Acer Aspire 5745DG looks much like your common or garden laptop, but this machine has a pretty neat trick up its sleeve. 15.6-inch Acer Aspire 5745DG laptop offers an affordable way of getting into 3D gaming. A Blu-ray drive and faster graphics chip would be welcome though, helping you to take advantage of more 3D content.

There are plenty of reasons to like the Acer Aspire 5745DG, but probably only one reason to buy it; you've got to be won over by the idea of 3D content. If you happen to have a collection of Blu-ray 3D titles or a camera that can take 3D photos, a 3D notebook could be the perfect way to enjoy your media. But let's be honest, that's a pretty big if.

With so many 15.6-inch laptops on the market it can be difficult to stand out from the crowd, but Acer has a cunning trick up its sleeve with the Aspire 5745PG. It's one of the few models around to use a touchscreen display. The Acer Aspire 5745PG impresses with its slick design, useful touchscreen and good all-round performance. It's one of the better 15.6-inch laptops you can buy right now.

In all we were surprised by how useful the touchscreen was in this package and while there is no intelligent switching for graphics we still remain impressed with the overall package. Given the overall build quality and decent keyboard it is worth checking out for users who want a touch screen on their notebook, so long as you don't mind connecting to external speakers.

The most accurate way to classify the 5745PG-3882 is as a mainstream multimedia notebook. As long as serious gaming isn't on your do-list, the 5745PG-3882 will serve you well with media and nearly any application. This alone presents a great value at less than $900; factor in the multitouch screen and the 5745PG-3882 becomes a compelling option for non-gamers.

The Acer Aspire 5745DG-3855 is by no means the first true-3D-capable laptop to hit the market (or our labs), but it is the least expensive one we've seen so far. This Aspire delivers solid performance and lets you play games in 3D using Nvidia’s GeForce 3D Vision technology. It's not the most advanced notebook of its kind, but it's a good choice for trying 3D without breaking the bank.

Our general impression is that 3D really impresses most that see it. Unfortunately, the impression is not strong enough to make all of them splash out to own it. However, if you’re a 3D enthusiast and crave for a 3D laptop, then there’s no reason why AS 5745DG shouldn’t make your list.

Aspire 5745DG is among the rare laptops, if not devices in general, that boasts 3D capabilities. Our test model, Acer Aspire 5745DG-5454G50Bnks comes with 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 450M CPU, 4GB of DDR3 memory and Nvidia Geforce GT 425M graphics. Intel’s integrated graphics is turned off by default so Nvidia’s discrete GPU runs all the time.

Acer: In 1976, the company was founded in Taiwan under the name Multitech and was renamed Acer or Acer Group in 1987. The product range includes, for example, laptops, tablets, smartphones, desktops, monitors, TVs and computer peripherals. Since 2007, the group has merged with Gateway Inc. and Packard Bell, which also market their own laptop product lines.
Acer computers are designed for a variety of purposes, including ultrabooks for mobile use, gaming laptops for gamers, affordable options for everyday tasks, and 2-in-1 convertible laptops for versatility. Acer's product portfolio also includes tablets that offer portable computing and multimedia capabilities.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M: The Nvidia GeForce GT 330M is the successor of the GT 230M and technically just a slightly higher clocked GT 240M (but it should still maintain the power envelope of the GT 230M as the naming suggests).
NVIDIA GeForce GT 420M: The GT 420M is an GF108 based middle class GPU with DirectX 11 support.
NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M: Successor of the GeForce GT 335M featuring DirectX 11 support and based on the GF108 chip.
Only some 3D games with very low demands are playable with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce 320M: Integrated chipset graphics card based on the GT216 core (e.g. GeForce GT 325M) but without dedicated memory. Supports Core 2 Duo processors.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Onboard graphics card that is built in the new Arrandale CPUs (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Depending on the model and Turbo Boost, the GMA HD is clocked between 166 and 766 MHz.
NVIDIA GeForce 310M: The GeForce 310M is the successor of the GeFore G210M and based on the same chip with very similar clock rates (shader speed +30MHz to 1530MHz).
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
720QM: The Core i7-720QM is the slowes Core i7 Quad Core in 2009 and clocks between 1.6 and 2.8 GHz (due to the Turbo Mode). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 720QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
740QM:
The Core i7-740QM is a high-end quad-core CPU for laptops (in 2010) with a relative small base clock rate and a high Turbo Boost max frequency of 2.93 GHz (for one core). Therefore, it combines the advantages of a slow clocked quad core CPU with a fast single core one. Compared to the faster Core i7 mobile CPUs, the 740QM only features 6MB L3 Cache.
620M:
The Core i7-620M is the fastest Dual-Core CPU for laptops (at the time of introduction in Q1 2010). The 620M clocks betwenn 2.66 and 3.33 GHz due to the Turbo Mode and because of Hyperthreading, 4 threads are executed simultaneously. In the package, Intel also included a second die with an integrated GPU (GMA HD) and a memory controller. Therefore, the TDP of 35 Watt of the whole package is still quite good.
Intel Core i3:
370M: The Core i3-370M is a fast clocked Core i3. The TurboBoost, AES, VTd, and Trusted Execution functions are deactivated in the i3-series. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.4 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
350M:
The Core i3-350M is technically a Core i5-430M without the Turbo Boost overlocking feature. Therefore, it always clocks with max. 2.26 GHz (of course Speedstep is included). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
Intel Core i5:
460M: The Core i5-460M has only 3 MB L3 Cache (compared to the I7-620M) and clocks between 2.53-2.8 GHz (Turbo Mode). Thanks to Hyperthreading, 4 threads can be processed simultaneously. An integrated graphics card (GMA HD) and a DDR3 memory controller are also included in the package.
450M: Should be similar to the Core i5-520M but without AES functions.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.
» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.6 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
