AMD is gearing up to launch “Dragon Range” and “Phoenix” APUs with Zen 4 cores and RDNA 3 graphics in 2023. The new APUs will power thin and light notebooks and gaming laptops. But before “Dragon Range” and “Phoenix” chips make an appearance on the market, AMD is launching another APU, dubbed “Mendocino”, for low-end to mid-range Windows laptops and Chromebooks in Q4 2022.
AMD revealed details of the “Mendocino” APU at Computex 2022. The chip will be packing up to 4 Zen 2 cores and 8 threads and RDNA 2 graphics. The revised Zen 2 cores are built on TSMC's 6 nm process node. The “Mendocino” APU will also have support for LPDDR5 memory. Per AMD, the new chip will be featured in the “US$399 to US$699 mainstream notebooks.”
Team Red also claimed that notebooks with the “Mendocino” APU will enjoy more than 10 hours of “mixed-usage” battery life. What kind of mixed usage? The company didn’t specify. Finally, AMD showed Lenovo IdeaPad 1 as a device powered by the new APU.
