Classic real-time strategy meets mythological power: Age of Mythology: Retold is a modern remake of the 2002 favorite, blending the familiar Age of Empires formula with legendary creatures and gods. It’s currently 50% off on Steam – its lowest price ever.

First released in 2002, Age of Mythology became one of the most beloved spin-offs of the Age of Empires series, combining core RTS elements like base building, resource management and real-time combat with mythical gods and legends. In September 2024, the strategy classic returned as Age of Mythology: Retold – featuring updated visuals, a new soundtrack and a range of quality-of-life improvements.

Just like in the original, players lead their civilization through a campaign, standalone battles and multiplayer skirmishes. They can choose from four pantheons – Greek, Atlantean, Egyptian and Norse – each with distinct strengths. Divine powers play a crucial role, with abilities like lightning bolts, meteor showers or earthquakes capable of turning the tide of battle. Mythical units add further depth, ranging from frost giants and Valkyries for the Norse to Cyclopes and Hydras for the Greeks.

In its review, German gaming magazine PCGames praised Age of Mythology: Retold for its significantly improved visuals, useful additions like on-screen hotkey displays and refined gameplay mechanics. The option to disable many of these features was also welcomed – allowing purists to enjoy an experience close to the original, just with a modern polish. However, the game faced criticism for its dated cutscenes and animations, as well as its slow pacing. The AI was also considered unchallenging, making human opponents the better choice for exciting matches.

Despite a few shortcomings, Age of Mythology: Retold has been met with consistently positive reviews. PCGames awarded it 8 out of 10, calling it "a great new edition of a strategy classic." On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 83 and a user score of 7.9. The reception on Steam is even stronger: 90% of more than 8,000 user reviews recommend the game.

Lowest Steam price yet: 50% off for the first time

Age of Mythology: Retold normally sells for around $30 on Steam, but until August 25 it’s available at half price for about $15. The Premium Edition, which adds the Immortal Pillars expansion with the Chinese pantheon and the upcoming Heavenly Spear expansion featuring the Japanese pantheon (launching September 30), is also 50% off, dropping from $50 to roughly $25. According to SteamDB, this marks the lowest price to date – previous discounts only went as far as 25%.
