With its strong cyberpunk vibe, Dex is a 2D RPG that combines traditional role-playing elements with sidescrolling action. Players assume the role of a young woman trying to survive in a tech-driven, surveillance-heavy city while being targeted by powerful corporations. In a 2018 review, the German gaming magazine Gamecontrast noted that the story doesn’t quite reach its potential and comes off as fairly underwhelming.
The review praised the well-balanced combination of RPG, platforming and hacking elements. The 2D game gives players plenty of freedom – whether choosing to fight enemies head-on, sneak past unnoticed or hack into systems for tactical advantages. It also features platforming passages to break up the action. Experience points can be spent in a flexible skill system with eight upgradeable abilities. According to Gamecontrast, the RPG mechanics, including the loot system, are both engaging and satisfying.
The richly detailed cyberpunk world of Dex was another highlight mentioned in the review. However, the combat system received criticism, with both melee and ranged combat described as sluggish and not especially satisfying. Gamecontrast awarded the game 76 out of 100 points. On Metacritic, it holds a Metascore of 62 and a User Score of 7.7. On Steam, about 3,500 reviews are 86% positive.
Record-low price with 94% discount
Developed by Dreadlocks Ltd. and released in May 2015 with support from Techland and WhisperGames, Dex is now seeing its biggest discount yet. While past SteamDB listings showed reductions of 80 to 90%, the Winter Sale has dropped the price to just $1.19 – a 94% discount from the original $19.99, valid until January 5. Steam Deck (available for $460 on Amazon) compatibility is listed as “Unknown,” but with minimal system requirements (Intel Pentium 2 GHz / NVIDIA GeForce 8800), the game should have no trouble running on modern handhelds.
