Open-world games have always been popular, but the technical advancements that have taken place in the last decade have really enabled the open-world subtype to take over. If you have a knack for exploration, survival, or even just an expansive first-person shooter, there's much to be had during the Steam Spring Sale, on until March 23, 2023.

1. Valheim

The survivalcraft genre has taken off in recent years, with games like Rust, Don't Starve, and Astroneer generating a cult following. Building on the popularity of the genre, Valheim puts players in a world heavily inspired by viking history and mythology, encouraging players to "Battle, build, and conquer your way to a saga worthy of Odin’s patronage!" The procedurally generated world is full of peril from both the environment and the violent monsters that roam it. Valheim is notorious for its difficulty, and the ultimate goal of defeating the six bosses scattered throughout the game's biomes requires dedication and mastery on both land and sea.

You can grab Valheim for US$13.99 during the Steam Spring Sale.

2. ARK: Survival Evolved

If you watched any of the Jurassic Park movies and thought you'd be just dandy in a world full of dinosaurs, ARK: Survival Evolved is here to prove you wrong. The game drops you on an isolated island populated by prehistoric giants, and it's up to you whether you want to bend them to your will, simply get them out of the way, or some combination of both. ARK, as the name suggests, is about survival. You must scavenge, build, hunt, and fight to stay alive and eventually escape the godforsaken island.

ARK: Survival Evolved is only US$4.99 during the Steam Spring Sale, until March 23, 2023.

3. Borderlands 3 - 85% off

If you're familiar with the Borderlands franchise, you'll know exactly what to expect when it comes to Borderlands 3. If you're not familiar, a brief summary of this first-person looter-shooter would mention over-the-top characters, great gunplay, detailed open world areas, and weapons that scream profanities at you. In Borderlands 3, you are a vault hunter tasked with taking on malicious online personalities, the Calypso Twins, and their ominous cult, The Children of the Vault.

Players choose between one of four vault hunters, each with their own unique skills and abilities, and venture off into the unknown to shoot bandits, hunt down alien creatures, and listen to somewhat outdated jokes and cultural references. It's not for everyone, but the Borderlands series did a lot of work popularising the looter shooter genre, and Borderlands 3 hits much of the same beat as the previous three games in the series.

Borderlands 3 has been offered for free by the Epic Games Store before, but if you didn't grab it then, an 85% discount through the Steam Spring Sale is a great second chance to catch up on what you missed for only US$8.99.

If you're a regular FPS sharpshooter, you'll know the value of a comfortable, quality mouse, like the Logitech G604 Lightspeed, available on Amazon.

4. Horizon: Zero Dawn - 67% off

Horizon: Zero Dawn is an open-world game that puts a heavy emphasis on the story, with much of the exploration of its gorgeous plains, hills, and valleys left to the side quests. That's okay, though, because the side quests are well-implemented, with the game having received much praise for ditching the common open-world tropes that lead to side quests feeling like chores or relentless XP grinding. Horizon: Zero Dawn follows Aloy on a journey to discover her own history and uncover the events that led to her world becoming overrun by giant, aggressive, mechanical creatures.

Horizon: Zero Dawn Complete Edition is on sale for US$16.49 during the Steam Spring Sale.
