3D Realms releases retro FPS Ion Maiden in Early Access
3D Realms is mostly known for releasing classic shooters such as Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, and Shadow Warrior in the ‘90s. The company was acquired by Interceptor Entertainment in 2014 and has been working on new projects ever since. They announced Ion Maiden for PC, a retro shooter that could fit right in with the aforementioned classic games. The Early Access version of the shooter is available on Steam and features a small preview campaign in anticipation of the final release.
Voidpoint Studios is developing the game and will regularly provide updates for the Early Access version with new features and new in-game content. The development studio anticipates that Ion Maiden will remain in its Early Access status for six months.
The final game will feature seven different zones, each with a number of respective maps. According to the developers, this new version of the Build engine features the classic action and aesthetic we know from older shooters, but with added features such as physics and checkpoints. In addition, Ion Maiden will take advantage of a wider color palette and larger, transformable levels. Steam Workshop support was also announced, and a multiplayer mode will be present in the final release.
Ion Maiden is priced at $19.99 and will retain this price tag after the game officially launches. To celebrate the Early Access release, there’s currently a discount of 10% being offered on Steam.
