Tesla removed the old Model 3 Performance edition from its configurator with the release of the Highland refresh and ditched all of its mentions. The move is seemingly in preparation for the release of the 2024 Model 3 Performance that will be priced at a $55,000 equivalent.

An odd looking Model 3 was caught driving covered as a test mule on the streets of San Francisco last week, and it seemed to differ from the Highland facelift that Tesla just released in the US. Some argued that this is the long-awaited Performance trim as it had a more aggressive bumper lip as well as red brake calipers.

That's not the first time that the sporty Model 3 has been caught covered with tarp and doing testing laps, while a Tesla Australia rep mentioned last month that a new Performance trim will be released in early 2024. It will reportedly feature "a few things we left on the table" in the original Model 3 Performance that was released during Elon Musk's "production hell" ramp up of the OG Model 3.

2024 Model 3 Performance price and release date

  • March-April 2024
  • $55,000

Besides Tesla's factory in Fremont, the Highland's Performance version is apparently being made at Giga Shanghai as well, report local insiders. The Performance trim will cost the equivalent of $55,000 when it is released some time in the March-April period, they added.

That is about 30% more than the current top Model 3 Long Range in the Tesla configuration roster and, if that same ratio is retained for the US versions, the 2024 Model 3 Performance could be more expensive than its predecessor that Tesla just phased out.

New Model 3 Performance design and specs

The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Performance is expected to sport a carbon fiber lip spoiler to show who's boss of the Highland trims, as well as the Model S/X Plaid radiant logo above the dual-motor signage at the rear.

It could also come with wider headrests and front seats with more lumbar support for those corner twists that will be approached at high speeds, and offer the option to ship without rear middle seat headrest for better visibility and an even cleaner look. A new set of 20-inch "Warp" rims is a given, too, along with performance brakes, suspension, and tire upgrades.

Mum's the word on the exact 2024 Model 3 Performance range and acceleration specs, but a new detail is the possible addition of a tri-motor option that may stay exclusive to Tesla fans in China, earning the rumored Ludicrous badge of honor.
