Many fans consider the Far Cry series to have lost its momentum after the past few releases, as it has relied on the same formula introduced with Far Cry 3. Its predecessor, Far Cry 2, on the other hand, was a genre-defining game at its time thanks to some of its unique mechanics that hold up even today.
Far Cry 2 is set in a fictional African country in the midst of a civil war. The protagonist is a mercenary tasked with taking down The Jackal, a notorious arms dealer who has been arming both factions. One can pick from a roster of nine characters, and the remaining eight show up as NPCs found throughout the campaign.
Unlike modern games that have an elaborate map with waypoints and the like, Far Cry 2 reduces that to a tablet and GPS, of which the latter is necessary to find Blood Diamonds, the in-game currency. Players can forge their own path in the vast, open world, often at great peril. The protagonist is afflicted with Malaria and needs medication to keep going, which can be acquired by completing quests.
Far Cry 2 was revered at its time for its challenging mechanics, such as jamming guns and terrain that responds in real time to player actions. For example, a fire lit in dry grass can quickly spread and damage you if you don't get away soon. The open world is harsh and challenging, and more often than not, stealth is the only correct approach.
You can now buy Far Cry 2 on GOG for just $2.99. If you want the original Far Cry (which is nothing like its sequel), both games will set you back by just $5.98. As a game launched in 2008, Far Cry 2 will run on just about any system built in the past decade and take up a measly 2.5 GB of hard drive space.
