The Satellite C650D-BT2N15 will put AMD’s new APU to the test

Toshiba is bringing in its first mainstream laptop featuring the new AMD Fusion processor, called the Toshiba Satellite C650D-BT2N15. The buyer will have a choice of either the single-core 1.5GHz AMD E240 or the dual-core 1.6GHz AMD E350 processor for the laptop, both with integrated Radeon HD 6310 graphics and HD video decoding. Otherwise, the affordable 15.6-inch notebook will include up to 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive, DVD writer, 802.11n wireless and Microsoft Windows 7 at 1366x768 native resolution.

The AMD Fusion platform integrates the CPU, GPU and memory controller all in one die, thus allowing for lower energy consumption and a possible “all-day battery life – 10 hours or more”, according to AMD. Such a processor is expected to be ideal for notebooks and other mobile devices once the Fusion platform begins to show up in more consumer electronics this year. How well it will stand up to competing mobile processors such as Nvidia’s Tegra and Texas Instrument’s OMAP series, however, remains to be seen.

The Satellite C650D starts at $399 and can be purchased today at the ToshibaDirect online store.
