Toshiba's Satellite M645-S4118X is a decent overall multimedia system especially for its slightly smaller dimensions. The problem is that it falls a bit short of similarly priced competition when it comes to the display or the graphics system. The company either needs to boost features to be more competitive or drop the price to better reflect its true value.

In notebook design, if you don't want to go thinner and lighter, you have only one other option if you don't want to built a fatter laptop: Stay the same size and just cram more in. A wide-ranging feature set and strong performance set this $1,099 thin-and-light notebook apart. You can’t find a better all-around 14-inch laptop for this size and price.

I think the most frustrating thing about reviewing the Toshiba Satellite M645 was that I wanted it to succeed and instead came away thinking about what might have been. This isn't a bad notebook by any stretch of the imagination: it runs cool and quiet, has USB 3.0 connectivity, and sports switchable graphics in a 14-inch chassis.

There might be nothing more disappointing as a product that approaches perfection, only to be undone by one key failure. The Toshiba Satellite M645-S4118X has a killer combination of Blu-ray, high-end graphics, and a fast processor at a price slightly north of $1,000, but poor battery life is the Achilles' heel on what would otherwise be an ideal 14-inch laptop.

There are hardly any tablets in this display size range anymore. For subnotebooks, on the other hand, it is the standard format.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small and therefore easily portable. The smaller display also has the advantage of requiring less power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is more strenuous on the eyes. High resolutions are more likely to be found in standard laptops.

75.6%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
